why does my cat yowl at 4am like he’s in pain??

My 3-year-old tabby is waking the whole house up by screaming at the wall every morning around 4 a.m. It’s not just a meow, it’s this long, drawn-out yowl that sounds almost painful.

I know I’m a vet tech, but I’m at my wit’s end. I’ve checked for flies, checked the window seals, and made sure he isn’t staring at a reflection. It’s just the drywall.

I wrote up the details of his recent exam and what we tried in Swee's 4am noise - vet visit recap so I wouldn't repeat myself here. The short version is: he’s healthy, no pain found, but the behavior is getting worse. Has anyone else seen this specific 'wall screaming' thing?

Oh my, that sounds exhausting for you and Swee. I’m sorry you’re dealing with that. I actually had a similar issue with Luna when she was younger, she would scream at the bedroom door. I found this thread helpful for some basic ideas: Luna screaming at the bedroom door every night.

I hope it helps. Also, check if he’s doing it at a specific time relative to his food. Sometimes it’s just learned behavior. Sorry for the typo, 'Luna' not 'Luna's'.

@swebb I read your recap thread and the fact that the vet cleared him of physical pain is a huge relief. But 4am is a very specific time. Is he on any meds? Even something minor? I had a Siamese mix, Mochi, who started vocalizing weirdly after we adjusted his thyroid meds. It wasn't pain, just agitation. Mochi's vocal changes after starting meds has some notes on that.

Also, have you tried ignoring it completely? If he gets up or even looks at the wall, he might think the screaming works. Daisy wants attention at 5am talks about the 'extinction burst' where it gets worse before it gets better.

lol 'screaming at the wall' is very on-brand for my maine coon. He does it to the window sometimes. I think it’s just the dawn chorus. Gizmo howling at the wall is my thread about this exact thing. I ended up just putting a white noise machine near the wall and he stopped after a week. Maybe try that? Or just put earplugs in and sleep through it. You can't fix a 4am cat.
