Top grooming tools for heavy shedders

Milo is a disaster zone right now. 3 years old, orange tabby, and he sheds like a furry snowball. 🐱💨

I’ve tried the regular brushes, but the fur just sits on the bristles. What specific tool do you all use to actually get the loose hair out of his short coat? I need something that works fast because he’s all over my black pants.

Milo sounds like a tiny tornado in fur form! I get that. My tuxedo cats, Ink and Spot, don't shed as much, but when Mochi is shedding, it's like confetti.

I use a soft rubber brush. It’s not fancy, just a simple one with little bumps. It doesn’t pull the hair, it just grabs it. Works for me, but maybe try the thread about rubber vs slicker brushes? It has some good photos of the results.

As a vet tech, I see a lot of matted short-haired cats because owners use the wrong tool. A slicker brush can be too harsh if you aren't careful. I recommend a fine-toothed comb for checking for tangles first, then a rubber brush for the loose hair.

Olive is a ragdoll, so she’s long-haired, but the principle is the same: gentle is better than aggressive. If you have any skin issues, check gentle shampoos before adding more grooming, sometimes the shedding is a symptom.

I have been dealing with Dolly’s grey fur for nine years now. Consistency is everything. I use a metal undercoat rake, but only on the days I know she has the most loose hair. For a short-haired cat like Milo, I would say the rubber brush is the safest bet.

I also keep a lint roller handy, but that’s for the furniture, not the cat. See getting fur out of black clothes for tips on the pants. As for the cat, don’t overdo it. Check how often to groom to make sure you aren't irritating his skin.

Oh Milo, poor thing! I lost my Mittens last year, so I know how stressful shedding can be. It feels like you’re just making a mess.

I used a special deshedding tool for Shadow, but he’s a black shorthair and it’s hard to tell when it’s working. I think the diet might be part of it too. Have you looked at does diet affect coat quality? Sometimes changing the food helps the coat come in stronger and sheds less. Hope you find the magic tool!
