Mild shampoo recommendations?

I am so stressed about bathing Rocco. He is my sweet 5-year-old American Shorthair, but his skin is so sensitive lately. I need a mild, tear-free shampoo recommendation. I don't want to irritate him or get it in his eyes. Any suggestions?

Hello dear. I am sorry you are having a difficult time. For sensitive skin, look for something pH-balanced and hypoallergenic. I have used a few different brands for my senior cats. You might want to check out soap options for itchy cats which lists a few formulas that are very gentle.

yo, try the unscented stuff. i use a specific one for Duke and it works great. no harsh chemicals. also, make sure the water is lukewarm like bathing tips for anxious cats suggests. helps with the whole process.

omg i feel you. Luna is super shy. I found a soap-free cleanser that was amazing for her allergies. It rinses out easily so it's less scary. using human products on cats is a thread you should read too, just to be safe about what you avoid.

Thank you all. The soap-free cleanser sounds promising. I was worried about the tears because Rocco has some issues with that too. Is there a specific ingredient I should look for to prevent that?

Tear-free usually means it has a mild surfactant. If he is prone to tearing, you might want to look at dealing with tear stains to see if the shampoo is contributing or if it is a separate issue. A gentle formula is best.

also, drying him is a pain. i use a towel and then a low heat dryer. check out drying techniques after bathing for some cool tricks. makes the whole bath less of a nightmare.

I went ahead and tried the soap-free cleanser you mentioned. Rocco actually tolerated it well! No redness or itching. I posted a full update in shampoos for long coats just to share what worked, even though he is short-haired, the product info is there. Thanks again!
