spring sniffles vs ury

Morning sneezing has started for Ziggy again. He is 6, orange tabby, very food motivated. Mild crust in eyes but eating fine.

I logged the vet visit and what we tried in this thread so I won't repeat it here. Just want to know how you tell if this is seasonal allergies or the start of a URI? It's spring so I'm leaning allergies but worried.

Haha, spring is rough. My Gizmo is 4 and a Maine Coon, he's not sneezing but he is a nightmare at mealtime. Since Ziggy is food motivated, make sure you are separating his food from the others when you treat the eyes, otherwise you get hissy. Check out my feeding tips if you need to manage the chaos.

I appreciate the detailed log in your earlier thread. For distinguishing between allergies and URI, I usually look for the duration. If it is strictly morning only and linked to pollen, it is likely environmental. If it persists through the day or worsens, it is a URI. My cats Nacho and Gordo don't have this issue, but I read a lot. Have you checked the humidity in the house?

It is interesting how we project our own anxiety onto their symptoms. Willow is 11, so I am always watching for decline. But for a healthy 6-year-old, the morning pattern is a strong indicator of environmental triggers. I would not rush to treat it as an infection unless the discharge changes color or the cat stops eating. I wrote about observing subtle changes in senior care, but it applies to any cat where you are worried about masking a real issue.

@egarcia humidity is around 40%, not too bad. @SparrowHollow good point about the discharge color. It is clear/white so far. I think I will try the eye cleaning method from this thread tomorrow morning to see if the crustiness goes away with just hygiene. If it sneezes all day, I am back to the vet.

One thing: if it is allergies, try to keep the windows closed in the morning. My partner is an engineer and he says pollen peaks at 8am. So feed Ziggy before you open the curtains. Also, check this thread for a list of non-medical things people tried.
