does eating special food help with teeth

I am so tired of dealing with Shadow's skin allergies and now I hear about teeth too. My vet said Moose needs work but I'm asking for Shadow. Can switching to a diet with dental enzymes actually reduce plaque buildup? I work night shifts so I can't brush his teeth every day like I should. Is food the only option?

I just need something that works while I'm at the hospital.

No. Food doesn't clean teeth. It might help a little with tartar but it's not a replacement for brushing. I tried the enzymatic treats for my Bengals and they just chewed them up and ignored the rest of the meal. Not worth the money if you want real results. Look at what dental treats are worth the money to see what I tested.

I agree with tigersdad. Moose is deaf in one ear which makes him startle easily but we got him used to it. Brushing is the only thing that really works. You have to start slow. I wrote up how I did it in my thread brushing Moose teeth without a fight. It took weeks but now he stands still for two minutes.

@DonnaInMaine that thread is helpful but I can't do that on a night shift. I'm barely sleeping. Also Shadow has skin allergies so I'm worried about adding new foods. Does the dental food mess with his skin? I saw something in trying to find a food that doesnt make Shadow itch that said certain additives cause flare ups.

I have a cat who is scared of everything. Pepper is 1 and runs from me if I hold her. How do you even get close enough to brush? I feel like I'm failing. Is there a spray or something? I can't do the full brushing routine. What do you all do when you are too tired?

The relationship matters more than the tool. If you are exhausted, the cat feels the tension. I have two cats, River and Quiet. Quiet is shy. I don't force brushing. I just sit near her and let her come to me. When she is calm, I offer a treat. No brushing. Just presence. The enzymes in food are a band-aid, not a cure. But if you can't brush, at least the food is better than nothing. Check is my cat bad breath normal or a sign of something wrong to know when to stop trying home remedies and call the vet.

My Maple is an orange tabby who lives outdoors. He doesn't need dental food. He chews on things. Nature provides. But for indoor cats like Shadow, maybe the food helps. I don't brush Maple. He is wild. But I understand the stress you are feeling, steph. The bond is real. Don't blame yourself for being tired.
