Getting my shy cat to use the new cat bed

Quiet has started sleeping in my slippers again. I know it is a sign of trust, but I really want him to use the new bed I bought for him. It is a plush, enclosed one that I think suits his shy personality better than the open basket we tried last month.

I have tried leaving treats in it, but he just eats them and goes back to the slippers. I am worried that if I keep fighting for the bed, I will damage the bond we have built. Does anyone have a technique that works without making the cat feel like they are being punished for their affection?

Height matters. Brutus hates low beds. Put the new one up on a shelf or a sturdy stack of books. If the spot is high, they feel safe. Also, make sure the material is not too scratchy. I learned that the hard way with a sisal post that Piper chewed to shreds in a week.

I struggle with this too, but for different reasons. Rex is a big guy and has some weight gain issues, so he likes the soft spots. I leave his bed near the door when I travel. It seems to help him settle. Have you tried placing the bed near where he sleeps now? If you move it too far away, he might just ignore it. Check out Getting my big boy to move for ideas on encouraging him to get up and explore the new spot.

Oh no, I am so sorry about the slippers! That is such a sweet sign of trust. I do the same with Peanut. He likes to sleep on my graphic design prints because they are soft. Since Quiet is 7, you have to be gentle. Coco is 14 and has hip issues, so I found that Soft surfaces for my hip issues is actually really relevant here. If the new bed is too firm, he will stick with the slippers. Make sure it has good support!

I have found that consistency is the most important factor. My Simba is 18 and deaf, so I cannot use sound cues to call him to the bed. Instead, I use a specific visual signal and a treat. You might want to look at Training tips for my deaf boy to see how I break down the steps. It is not about forcing him to the bed, but making the bed the most rewarding option. Also, if he is shy, do not crowd the space. Let him approach the bed on his own terms.

Thank you all. The height idea from slane makes sense, I will try moving it to the bookshelf. And beth_b96, I will check that thread about soft surfaces, Quiet does seem to prefer the texture of the slippers. kims73, the consistency idea is good. I think I will start by placing the bed right next to the slippers for a few days, then slowly move it away. Does anyone else have experience with this gradual shift? I saw a thread about Why does she like my laundry basket that mentioned similar redirection, but I want to be careful not to make it a battle.

I think the gradual shift is the way to go. I tried moving Rex's bed across the room in one go and he refused to use it for a week. I had to move it back. Since I am traveling a lot, I also use Keeping him busy while I am on the road to keep his mind off the sleeping spots when I am not there. It helps with the anxiety, which might be part of why he clings to familiar objects.
