gift vs trophy debate

Okay so I am really confused about Bella. She is 6 and usually very polite, but last night she brought a dead moth to my bed and just sat there looking at me. I know the old theory is that they bring us gifts because they think we are bad hunters, right? But then Charlie, my 2 year old mixed, brings me a toy mouse every morning and rubs against my leg. The moth thing felt different. It was quiet. No rubbing. Just the moth on the pillow.

Is there a difference between a cat bringing a gift to say "look what I caught for you" and showing off a catch to say "look what I am"? I feel like I am overthinking it but Bella is acting weird. Has anyone else noticed this distinction? I checked why they leave it on my pillow and it just talks about the nest, not the social dynamic. I need to know if she is trying to tell me something specific.

I had this with Milo. He is a 2 year old british shorthair and he brought a dead bird to the kitchen table last week. I was terrified because it was so big. I thought maybe he was sick or something was wrong with him. I read behavior changes when sick but it didn't really answer the social question.

When he did it, he didn't meow. He just placed it there and walked away. I think that is different from when he brings his toys. He is very anxious about his skin issues so I worry that every new behavior is a sign of stress. Maybe the moth thing is just a sign he is feeling confident? Or is it a display of dominance? I don't know.

my shadow does this all the time. he is a 3 year old black dsh and he brings dead spiders to my pillow. i work nights so i am usually sleeping when he does it. i think it is just a gift because he knows i am alone. if it was showing off he would meow at me or something. he is very quiet. i just throw it away when i wake up. is that bad? i feel like i am being rude to him but i cant keep dead bugs in my bedroom. i tried to redirect him but it is hard when i am asleep. see stopping the moth delivery service for what i tried that didn't work.

There is a nuance here that I think we miss. When a cat brings a live or recently dead prey item and stays with it, watching you, it is often a social bid. It is an invitation. "Look at this. Look at me. Acknowledge this." It is a shared moment.

But when they drop it and leave, or when the item is clearly just a token (like a toy or a very old dead bug), it can be more about marking territory or a habitual routine. Bella bringing the moth and sitting there watching you, as Paul describes, sounds like a social bid. It is not about you being a bad hunter. It is about her wanting to connect with you through the object. She is saying, "This is part of our world now."

Charlie bringing the toy mouse is likely just a play invitation or a routine. The moth is different because it is real. It carries weight. I think the difference is in the intent of the interaction, not just the object.

@RiverQuiet that makes a lot of sense. The fact that she sat there and watched me is what got to me. She usually leaves after she drops something. I feel bad because I just picked it up and put it in the trash. Was that rude? Did I reject the social bid? I am worried she is going to be upset with me. She has been a little distant today. Is that normal? I checked is my cat lonely or just showing off and it says to engage more, but I am not sure how to engage with a dead moth.

I think you are overthinking it? Leo is only 1 and he brings me crumpled pieces of paper. He doesn't even care if I look at them. He just drops them near me. I think Bella is just being Bella. If she is distant maybe she is just tired? Or maybe she is hungry? I would check if she has eaten. I am not an expert but I think the moth thing is just a weird habit. I hope she is okay. I worry about my cats a lot. Is it bad to be that worried?

i would not worry about the moth. cats are weird. shadow brings me stuff all the time. some days he brings a feather, some days a bug. i just ignore it. if he is distant maybe she is in a mood. cats have moods. i am not a vet so i dont know for sure. but i think the social bid thing is cool. i will try to look at it next time. thanks for the info @RiverQuiet. i always write it up when i figure something out so you can see what worked for me in my own thread later, but for now just give her a treat. that usually fixes things.
