Why my cat ignores the $50 bed

Okay, I just spent $50 on one of those plush, heated-looking beds with the raised edges. I put it right next to my nightstand. Ellie walked over, sniffed it, looked at me with pure judgment, and then went to sleep in my slippers. The ones I was going to wear to the grocery store. I am so done.

Cricket is doing the same thing but with my yoga mat. Why do they hate the expensive stuff? Is it the texture? I feel like I'm failing as a cat owner if they don't use the designated spot.

It is not the texture. It is the smell. My persian mix, Pumpkin, will not sleep in her bed unless I leave my old wool sweater next to it. The sweater has to be worn, not just clean. It needs to smell like me.

I read a thread about this ages ago, Is it the smell or the softness?. The consensus was that the scent is the primary driver. The bed is just a surface. If you want them to use the $50 bed, you have to put a shirt on it that you have actually worn that day.

I must say, I have found that cats are very particular about location as well. Tux loves a specific laundry basket because it is near the window where the light hits in the morning. He ignores the expensive beds I have tried to move into that room.

I think it is also about temperature. See Thermoregulation and bed placement for a detailed breakdown of how cats seek out warm spots. Your slippers are likely warmer than the cold bed because they have been near your feet or in a warm part of the room.

Hahaha, Ellie sounds like my boy Loki! He sleeps in my gym bag. It is hilarious. I think it is about security. They feel safe when they are surrounded by your scent. It is like a big hug from you, even when you are not there.

Check out Enclosed spaces and kitten security if you want to understand why they like tight spots like slippers or bags. It is all about feeling protected. Don't worry, it is not a rejection of the bed, it is just their way of saying 'I like you better than this foam'.

I tried the shirt trick last night and she actually moved onto the bed! But then she rolled off into the slippers again. Ugh.

Is there a way to keep them off the slippers specifically? I need to go out looking presentable, not like I stepped in a puddle of cat hair. I saw Keeping the laundry pile cat-free but most of those tips are for clothes on a chair. Slippers are tricky because they are on the floor.
