My kitten was prescribed a course of antibiotics for a mild ear infection, but the price tag at the pharmacy was shocking. Does anyone know if there are specific generics that are just as effective for cats, or do I have to pay the premium for the brand name?
antibiotics for ear infection cost way too much
generic is always better for the wallet. my vet writes the brand name but i just tell the pharmacy i want the generic. if they push back, ask for the name. see asking the vet for the generic name instead of the brand for how to word it. also check best places to buy pet meds cheap because some stores are way cheaper than others.
I had this same issue with Shadow last year. The vet said the brand was necessary for absorption, but I found out later that the generic was fine for most cases. It really depends on the specific drug. For ear stuff, you might want to look at ear infections that wont go away because sometimes the antibiotic isn't the main problem, it's the yeast or bacteria underneath. But for a mild one, the generic should work.
Call the pharmacy. Ask for the generic equivalent. If they don't have it, ask your vet for the generic name on the prescription. See saving money on vet bills and meds for more tips.
