Sam is 4 and a mix. We keep getting ear infections that clear up with antibiotics but come back a month later. The vet just prescribes the same stuff every time. I am worried there is something else going on that we are missing. Has anyone had this?
ear infections that wont go away
I would ask for a culture and sensitivity test. If it is not mites or a polyp, it might be a resistant bacteria. My cat Shadow had similar issues until we found out it was a specific strain. Check ear mites vs bacteria to rule out mites first, though. It is cheap and easy.
Could it be allergies? I think Bear had something similar. I read that food allergies can show up as skin or ear problems. See food allergies and ear issues for more details on that. It is worth a try before more meds.
1. Rule out mites.
2. Check for polyps (see ear polyps in cats).
3. Ask about immune issues.
4. Consider home care in between vet visits.
I foster, so I see a lot of this. Often it is not the treatment, it is the environment. Did you try the suggestions in home remedies for ears? They help keep the ear dry.
I notice my cat Lulu scratches more when the weather changes. Is that relevant? I wonder if it is just a coincidence or if it is related to his immune system. I saw a thread about immune system and ear infections that made me think about this. Maybe it is a deeper issue.
Whiskers had this too. The vet said it was just bad luck. But I feel like we should look at the underlying cause. I am going to ask about a culture test like slong said. Does anyone know if that is expensive?
The cost is the other issue. The brand name is pricey. I am looking for generics. I found a thread about saving money on cat meds that might help. But first I need to know if the med even works. The vet said to call if it comes back.
