studio apartment foster limits

I'm currently fostering a 3-month-old orange tabby named Biscuit. He's healthy and playful, but I'm worried because I live in a 400 sq ft studio. My resident cat Mochi is a 1-year-old Siamese mix who is very vocal and sensitive to changes. Is a studio apartment too small for fostering a second cat, or am I overthinking this? I want to make sure Mochi isn't stressed out by the new addition.

Oh honey, don't worry so much! I have a 12-year-old black shorthair named Shadow who has CKD stage 3, and she lives in a fairly small space too. Cats are adaptable! As long as you give Mochi her own safe spot away from Biscuit, she will be fine. Have you looked at vertical space hacks? Adding some cat trees or shelves can make a huge difference in a studio.

I am not sure I agree with the 'small is fine' approach. My cat Maple is a 5-year-old orange tabby who loves the outdoors, and I fight for her access to a safe fenced area. A studio apartment feels like a cage to me. If you are going to foster, you need to ensure the resident cat has enough room to retreat. See the case for the fence for why I think confinement is bad for cat mental health. Biscuit needs space too, not just a box.

I travel a lot for work, so I know how stressful it is to leave a cat alone. My mainecoon Rex is 10 years old and has weight gain issues, so I am very careful about his routine. When I have visitors or a new cat in the house, I use the slow introduction method. Check out introduction without the hiss for the step-by-step process. It takes time, but it prevents fights. Also, make sure Biscuit is up to date on vaccines, as discussed in pre-foster vet visits.

Thanks everyone. I tried the scent swapping from introduction without the hiss last night, and Mochi was hissing a lot. I checked when your cat looks off to see if she was showing other signs of stress, like hiding or not eating. She ate her dinner but is spending most of her time on the high shelf. I think I might be pushing it. I posted an update in Biscuit update to see if I should pause the introduction for a few days.
