Hi all! So I just adopted Nora, a 1-year-old mixed breed. She’s super curious but still a bit shy. I want to make sure I’m socializing her properly to me and the house so she feels safe. Any tips on best practices for the first few weeks? 🐾
Socializing a new cat
Hello Dana. It is wonderful to welcome Nora. From my experience with Ollie and Mabel, the most important thing is patience. Do not force her to come to you. Let her explore on her own terms. I suggest keeping the environment quiet and dim for the first few days, just as beth_b96 advised in Socializing a feral cat for sharon62’s kittens. If she is skittish, she needs to build trust slowly.
Short answer: food. My Tiger is food motivated. I used high-value treats to get him to associate my presence with good things. I kept the treats at arm's length and let him come to me. It worked for him, though he’s a 6-year-old Bengal so he’s already pretty tough. For a shy cat, it’s a solid start.
Thanks Joan and tigersdad! I did try the catnip toy idea from Socializing a feral cat but Nora just sniffed it and walked away. I’m worried she’s not going to eat enough either. Does anyone have a good feeding routine for a new cat?
Check Feeding a new cat on a schedule. I wrote that up when I got Milo. The vet told me to keep the food in a specific spot and not move it. Consistency is key. If she’s not eating after 24 hours, call the vet. Don’t guess.
I worry about this too. Rex is a 10-year-old Maine Coon and I travel a lot for work. I’ve tried to keep his routine super consistent because he’s got weight gain issues. When I’m away, I have a camera so I can check on him. Maybe that’s a good idea for Nora too? Just to see if she’s hiding or exploring.
Good point MarkInDenver. I might set up a camera. I’ll definitely follow dan_ward’s advice on the food. Thanks everyone, this is helpful!
