I have a 6-week-old kitten, Pip. He is a total bottle baby. He drinks from the bottle like a champ but will not touch wet food mashed with water. I’m trying to figure out what signs I should be looking for to know he’s actually ready to switch to solids. Is it just about age, or does he need to show specific behaviors first? I don’t want to force it and have him stop eating entirely.
Signs a kitten isn't ready to wean
Age is a big part of it, but it’s not the whole picture. At six weeks, most kittens are in the transition phase, but some are slower. You need to look at whether they are showing interest in the food bowl at all. Are they sniffing it? Licking it? If they are actively avoiding the bowl and running back to the bottle, they aren't ready. Also, check their weight. If they are gaining weight consistently, you have a little more time. If they are losing weight, that’s a different story. See When a kitten not eating is a medical issue for the red flags that mean you need to call the vet today.
Sniffing is a start, but licking is the real sign. If he’s just smelling it and leaving, he’s not ready to chew. I had a similar issue with a friend’s kitten last year. It took a while. You might want to look at Getting a kitten to lick food for some tricks to get them to taste it. My cat Jasper is a disaster, but he learned to eat solids eventually. It’s about patience.
Thank you both for the input. I agree with @jgreen that licking is the key milestone. I found that warming the food helps a lot with the smell. You can try Warming food to get a kitten interested. It makes the food smell more like milk to them. Also, make sure you are feeding him enough times a day. A six-week-old needs frequent meals. Feeding schedule for a 6 week old has some good guidelines on that.
This is so stressful. Pip is so cute when he drinks from the bottle, but I worry about his teeth and digestion. I’ve tried the mashed food with water, but he just looks at it and then looks at me. Is there a specific type of food that works better? I saw someone mention What wet food actually works for weaning? and I’m not sure which one to buy. I just want him to be safe and healthy.
Thanks for the links. I’m going to try warming the food and increasing the feeding frequency. I think the issue is that he’s not used to the texture. I’ll keep updating here. If he stops gaining weight, I’m calling the vet. For now, I’m trying to be patient. My 6-week-old won't stop nursing seems to be my exact situation.
