Mabel's kidney stage 1 update

Hello everyone. I wanted to share an update on Mabel, my 12-year-old Ragdoll. She was recently diagnosed with stage 1 kidney disease. Since she is still eating well and her energy is mostly normal, we are managing it at home with diet changes.

I have switched her to a wet food specifically formulated for renal support, as discussed in Getting picky cats to eat renal food. She seems to accept it better than the dry kibble we used before. I am also keeping a close eye on her water intake, using the method described in Best way to track water intake at home by weighing her bowl daily. It is surprising how much more she drinks now that the food is less salty.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear about Mabel, but it is good that she is doing well. I was just reading Warning signs when kidney stage changes because I am worried about Bella. She is only 3, but she has been drinking a lot more water lately. Do you think that is a bad sign or just because it is hot outside?

Also, does the wet food cost a lot more? I am trying to budget for the long term care, similar to what was talked about in Managing the cost of kidney care. I am nervous about the price of prescription food.

Joan, that is a very thorough approach. I am traveling next week and my Mainecoon Rex is having some weight issues, which is a different problem, but I am worried about leaving him alone for a few days. I saw Litter box setup for multiple cats but I only have one cat. Does having a second box help with anxiety when the owner is gone, or is it just for multi-cat households?

I am also curious about supplements. I read Supplements for early stage kidney support but I am not sure if they are necessary if the diet is already adjusted. What are you giving Mabel besides the food?

Laura, I would not worry too much about Bella's water intake yet, but keep an eye on her. If she is drinking significantly more than usual, it is always better to check with a vet to rule out anything else. As for the cost, yes, it is higher, but Mabel's health is the priority. I found that buying the wet food in bulk from a local store that carries it was cheaper than ordering online every month.

Mark, regarding the supplements, I am not using any right now. My vet said the diet is the most important part for stage 1. I am waiting for her next bloodwork, which is scheduled in three months, as recommended in How often to retest for kidney disease. I will post an update in a follow-up thread once I have those results.
