Lost Pepper last week, feeling hollow

I lost Pepper last week. He was an 8-year-old black shorthair. Eight years is a good life, but it feels short when you’ve shared a home for that long. I’ve been sitting in the quiet of the house and feeling completely hollow. I know intellectually that he was getting older, but the silence is louder than I expected. I’m trying to be strong for the others, but the grief is hitting hard.

Sorry to hear that, lynn_b60. Grief is a pain you have to work through. My Rocky is only 5, so I’m not in the same spot, but I know the feeling of the house being too quiet. Don’t rush it. You can’t fix it like a carburetor. Just let yourself feel it.

The hollow feeling is the shape of the space they used to occupy. Willow is 11 now, and I watch her sleep and think about how much of that quiet time is left. It is a strange, double-edged thing to love something you know will end. I think the processing happens in the small moments, like finding a hair on your sleeve or hearing a footstep that isn’t there. It is not linear. It just arrives in waves.

I’m so sorry, lynn_b60. I read your post and I’m shaking a bit. I lost a cat a few years ago and I still feel it when I open the fridge and reach for the treat jar. I’ve been reading about how the health of the remaining pets can make the grief harder because you’re worried about them too. I think it depends on their specific needs. If you have older cats, like the ones mentioned in Dealing with arthritis in my senior cat, the worry about their mobility and pain can make the loss feel even more complex. Also, if you’re looking at the big picture of what to do next for them, the discussion in When does treatment become too much for a senior cat? might help you figure out if you’re focusing on comfort or cure. I’m anxious about it all.

Short and blunt: it sucks. My Tigers are 6 and destructive, so my life is chaos, not quiet. But the silence is the hardest part. You don’t need to 'process' it like a project. You just live it. Maybe check out Coping with the loss of a long-time pet if you want to see what other people did. It’s not a fix, but it’s a map of the mess.
