introducing a new cat to my asthmatic siamese

I am feeling very anxious about bringing Miso home. Bella is six and has asthma, so I am worried about any changes in the air quality or stress levels. Charlie is two and healthy, so he should be fine, but Bella is the one I am scared for.

We are planning to keep Miso in a separate room for the first two weeks. I have been looking at litter options because the current clumping litter kicks up a lot of dust when Bella is nearby. Is there a specific type that works better for respiratory issues?

Also, should I start the introduction process immediately after Miso arrives, or wait until he is fully acclimated to the new house? I read that stress can trigger asthma attacks, and I do not want to make things worse for Bella.

Hello Paul, it is very good that you are thinking this through carefully. I would suggest waiting until Miso is settled and not stressed by the move before starting the scent swapping. A few days is usually enough.

For the litter, I have found that pellet litters are much better for dust control. You can check the thread on low dust litter I posted earlier; there are a few options that do not produce much dust. Since Bella is in the other room, the main risk is when they are introduced later. Make sure the air in the shared space is clean. I use an air purifier in the living room, which you can read about in air purifiers and cat hair. It helps a lot with keeping the air clear of dander and litter dust.

Oh man, I feel your stress! My cats Loki and Freya are both four and they are total chaos, but I remember when I brought them in. I used a pheromone diffuser in the hallway between the rooms. It really helped calm the vibe.

Since Bella has asthma, I would be extra careful with the litter. Maybe try a paper-based litter? It is less dusty. Also, keep the windows closed if it is windy outside, so no pollen gets in. I hope Miso settles in fast!

It is a delicate balance. Willow is eleven and has some breathing issues too, so I understand the worry. I think the separation period is crucial. Do not rush the introduction. Let them smell each other under the door for a few days before any face-to-face meeting.

The air quality is just as important as the social dynamics. If the air is heavy with dust or dander, Bella's system will be on alert. A clean environment is a quiet environment. Take it slow.

Thank you all for the advice. I think I will wait a few days for Miso to settle. I am going to look into the paper-based litter and maybe get another air purifier for the bedroom.

I just posted an update in a new thread about the first night, so you can see how it went.
