ok so i am losing my mind here. i brought home a new kitten and i am so stressed out because he is acting weird and i don't know if it's just the new place or if something is wrong. he keeps hiding under the bed and then suddenly zips across the room like he is crazy. i tried the pheromone diffuser that everyone says is magic but i honestly don't know if it is doing anything. he still gets into the trash and knocks things off the counter. i feel like i am failing at this. has anyone else used these diffusers and actually noticed a difference or is it just a placebo for the cat owner? i need to know if i should keep buying these things or try something else.
do pheromone diffusers help with new cat stress?
Hi Andrea, take a deep breath. You are not failing. Introducing a new cat is hard. I used diffusers for my Siamese when we moved. It helped a little, but it wasn't a miracle. It took about two weeks for her to really settle. Check out my thread where I compared the different brands, comparing pheromone diffuser brands and effectiveness. I found that the one with the cat facial pheromones worked better for me than the one with the dog appeasing pheromones. Also, make sure you are not placing the diffuser in a draft or near a window.
thanks kate. i read that thread but i am still confused about which one to use. my kitten is a bengal mix and he is very high energy. i am worried he is just bored. i saw a thread about redirecting leo's destructive scratching habits and it had some good tips on scratching posts but i don't know if that will stop him from knocking things over. do you think the diffuser is even working if he is still being destructive?
Pheromones are not a substitute for proper enrichment. A Bengal mix needs to burn off energy. I feed my cats a raw diet which keeps them more active, see my post on mixing raw and commercial food for picky eaters for how I manage their meals. If your kitten is hiding, he is stressed. If he is zooming, he is under-stimulated. Try playing with him for ten minutes three times a day. The diffuser may help with the hiding, but it will not stop the zoomies if he has no outlet for his energy.
I agree with Karen. Also, please be careful to distinguish between stress and illness. I have a thread on when is a cat's weird behavior actually a medical issue that might help you. If the kitten is not eating or is having diarrhea, please call the vet. Pheromones will not fix a medical problem. But for general adjustment, they are a reasonable tool. I used them for my ragdoll when she was a kitten and it did seem to calm her down during the first week.
yo i had the same issue with my white cat ivy. she was super shy. i used a diffuser and it helped a bit but mostly i just left her alone. check out my thread on helping ivy feel more comfortable in the house. the diffuser was not the magic fix, the time was. give it a few weeks. also, make sure the new kitten has his own space away from the other cats so he doesn't feel threatened. i did that with my black cat duke and it worked.
i think i need to look at my history with the other cats. i have a dsh named mia who is very calm but she hisses at the new kitten. i posted about the introduction process in introducing leo to mia - timeline and tips but i am not sure if i am doing it right. the diffuser is in the room where they meet. should i move it? or is the diffuser making it worse because mia is annoyed by the smell?
