dealing with extreme shedding on dark furniture

My 3-year-old shorthair sheds so much that my black sofa looks like it’s covered in fur even after I vacuum it twice a day.

I feel like I’m constantly picking at the cushions. Are there specific grooming tools that actually reduce shedding more than a standard brush? I’ve tried the little plastic ones but they don’t seem to get the undercoat.

Oh my gosh, the black sofa struggle is real. 😩

I use a rubber grooming glove on Milo and it pulls way more hair than my regular brush. It’s not magic, but it helps a lot. Also, check out Getting fur off my black couch for some cleaning hacks that actually work on dark fabric.

Before you buy more tools, you might want to look at the diet.

I’ve found that cats on raw food have significantly less loose fur. It’s not just about brushing; it’s about the quality of the coat itself. You can read more about the connection in Raw feeding and coat condition. I don’t say this to be difficult, just that a brush only treats the symptom.

I would also look at your home humidity.

We had a similar issue with Mabel when the air was very dry in the winter. A humidifier helped her coat stay healthier and she shed less. It’s a small change but it made a difference. More details in Dry air and shedding.

Thanks everyone. I think the humidity might be a factor since it’s been dry lately.

I’ve been meaning to post more about our cats since I’ve been quiet. You can read about Cleo’s background in Cleo's story if you’re curious about our household setup.
