Getting fur off my black couch

I am so frustrated. Milo is a 3-year-old orange tabby and he sheds like a snowstorm. Every day.

The problem is my couch is black. I use a standard vacuum twice a day but I still see this fuzzy orange layer on the cushions. It looks like a mess.

I tried the rubber brush thing I saw in this thread but it just moves the hair around. What actually works for dark furniture? I need to see the fabric again.

Hi Dana. I work with cats for a living so I know the frustration. Since Milo is shedding that much, it might not just be the cleaning method.

Is it possible he has a skin issue? I ask because sometimes heavy shedding is a symptom of something else, like allergies or parasites. My own ragdoll, Olive, has had skin flare-ups before. It is always worth checking with your vet to rule out medical causes first. If he is healthy, then we are just dealing with volume.

I completely agree with ptaylor. My siamese, Whiskers, had a similar issue a few years ago. It turned out to be a mild skin condition. Once we treated that, the shedding dropped significantly.

However, for the furniture specifically, I found that using a lint roller with sticky adhesive works better than the rubber brushes for the final sweep. You need something that grabs the hair rather than just pushing it. I use it on my black dining chairs and it takes care of the last bit of fuzz.

Oh no, the black furniture struggle. My Rocco is an American Shorthair and he is very cuddly, which means he is on the couch all the time. His gray fur is invisible on my gray sofa, but I can imagine how bad orange would look on black.

Have you tried a static cling cloth? I use those for my car seats. They seem to pull the hair off better than a regular vacuum nozzle. I am not sure if it will work on your specific fabric, but it is worth a try before you buy more gadgets.

I have a mixed cat named Sam and he sheds a moderate amount. I actually think the humidity in my house helps. I saw a post about humidifiers reducing shedding and I tried it. The air feels less dry and the fur doesn't seem to float around as much.

Also, did you check out vacuuming tips for dark furniture? Someone mentioned using a brush attachment instead of the main head. It gets into the crevices of the cushions where the main vacuum just blows the hair around.

Thanks everyone. I will ask my vet about the skin thing just in case. The static cloth idea is interesting. I will try that on one cushion tonight.

I just posted an update in a follow-up thread with some photos of what I tried. It is called "Update on the black couch war". I will link it here when I get home.
