why my cat insists on being the highest point in the room

Skye has started demanding to be the highest point in the room. Not just the bookshelf, but the top of the bookshelf. I have tried moving her, but she just stares at me until I give up.

Is this normal for a 10-year-old Maine Coon, or is she trying to tell me something? She is deaf in one ear, so I worry she is trying to compensate for something.

Normal. Brutus is a 6-year-old Maine Coon and he lives on top of my kitchen cabinets. If you want to keep the furniture intact, look at sturdy cat trees for big cats. I use a heavy base to stop it tipping.

Cats seek height to feel safe and in control. It is like a tree branch in the forest. Sparrow is 8 and loves the top of the laundry basket. You might want to check out sparrow's zoomies for ideas on where she likes to perch when she is calm.

My Mochi is only 2 and teething, so he doesn't care about heights. He just chews the base of the scratching post. mochi's food transition has been hard enough without furniture damage.

I have four DSHs in my spare room. Bean is 3 and shy. She only goes up when she feels safe. helping bean settle in explains how I set up a quiet corner with a high perch for her. It might help Skye if she is stressed.

Good points. I will look at the trees. I am not sure she is stressed, though. She has always been a high-percher. I think it is just her nature. I posted about her background in skye's rescue story if anyone wants more context.
