I'm trying to get Mittens onto that new senior formula. She's 8 and a bit heavy, so I want to make sure she's getting the right nutrients. We did the standard mix, but her stool has been loose for three days now. Is this normal or did I move too fast?
Switching food for seniors
You went too fast. Puff had the same issue last month. I do 14 days. First 3 days are 25% new. Next 3 days are 50%. Then 75% for 4 days. Full switch on day 14. No rush.
Okay, I'll slow it down. I remember seeing a thread about kibble transition ratios but I forgot the exact numbers. Thanks for that. Should I warm up the new food a bit to make it smell better?
My Milo is very picky about texture. When I switched him, I had to soak the new kibble in warm water for about 5 minutes until it was soft. He didn't eat it if it was crisp. Might help with the smell too.
I just swapped Sophie's food completely and she ate it fine. But I changed the bowl at the same time and she was stressed for two days. Maybe keep the bowl the same? She's anxious so I worry about changes.
Good point about the bowl. I'll keep her dish the same. I'm also looking at digestive upset during food switch to see if I need to add anything. If the loose stool doesn't stop in a few days, I'm calling the vet.
If it's just soft for a day or two, it's fine. Check out signs of food intolerance though. If she's vomiting or refusing food, stop. Don't push it.
