Safest way to hold a feral cat
I am so sorry you are dealing with this, Vicky. It can be quite stressful. Have you tried using a heavy blanket to wrap him up? I find that it limits his movement significantly. You can also block the carrier door with a towel so he cannot get out while you are in transit. I wrote up a full guide on this in my carrier tips thread if you want more details on the setup.
Use a towel. Do not use a thin cloth. The cat will tear through it. I use a thick bath towel. Wrap it tight around the body but leave the head exposed so he can breathe. See my post on fabric types for what worked for me with Mittens when she was younger and more active.
Be very careful. Feral cats can bite even when wrapped. If he does bite you, clean it immediately. I lost sleep over a small scratch last year. Read my post on treating bites so you know what to do if it happens. It is not worth the risk of infection.
Oh my gosh, poor thing! And poor you! I hope he settles down fast. My Loki was like that when we adopted him, totally wild. Did you check if he is actually feral or just shy? There is a difference. I wrote about the signs in my feral vs shy thread. It might help you decide how much force to use.
thanks for the input. i am worried he will fight back hard. i heard vets can sometimes sedate these cats. is that a thing? i saw something about it in the sedation thread but not sure if it applies to a first visit.
It is possible, but it depends on the clinic. Many places do not sedate for a first exam unless the cat is in danger of injuring staff. You can call ahead and ask. I think the best approach is still the blanket method. I have a whole write-up on what worked for me in the vet handling thread. It includes specific steps for wrapping the cat securely so you can carry him to the car.
