Nala's arthritis and mobility

I am struggling with Nala's mobility. She is 16 and the arthritis in her hips is getting worse. She used to go to the box on the second floor, but now she is skipping it or just sitting in the hallway looking distressed.

I have tried moving the box to the main floor, but she is hesitant. I am wondering if the litter texture or the depth is the issue, or if it is purely the physical effort of stepping in. I saw a post about box configurations but I am not sure if that applies to a cat with this level of pain.

Hi Kim, working with mobility issues is tricky. For Nala, the entry height is likely the primary barrier, not just the location. A standard box requires a flexion of the hip that can be very painful for a 16-year-old. I would look at a box with a very low entry, or even just a tray with a ramp. Texture matters too; clumping litter can be heavy and hard to dig through if the joints are stiff. I've had success with a larger, softer pellet litter that doesn't require as much digging.

My cat Buster is only 6 but he is vocal when he is stressed. I think the pain is the main thing here. Have you tried a non-clumping, fine grain litter? It is easier to step into. Also, make sure the box is on a non-slip surface. If the floor is slick, she might be afraid to push off.

Thank you both. I will try the fine grain litter today. I am also worried about her hydration since she is avoiding the box. I remember reading that kidney issues often come with mobility problems in seniors, so I want to make sure she is drinking enough. Is there a specific way to encourage water intake without forcing her to move to a different room?
