Is it worth a trip to the vet for one accident?

I am writing this with a heavy heart, though I try to keep my emotions in check when documenting health issues. Luna, my 3-year-old Siamese mix, had a single incident this morning. She eliminated on the beige rug in the living room, not near her litter box.

I immediately cleaned the area with an enzymatic cleaner, as I have done in the past. Miso, my 1-year-old tabby, was not involved; he is usually too shy to be in that part of the house.

My question is: is one accident enough to warrant a trip to the vet? I know that stress or minor changes can cause this, but I want to be thorough. I have logged the time, location, and the type of elimination in my records. I am considering waiting 24 hours to see if it happens again, but I worry about missing an early sign of something like a urinary tract issue.

I have read this thread on medical causes and it lists several possibilities, but none of the symptoms seem to match Luna's current behavior. She is eating well and playing normally.

Does anyone have experience with a single, isolated incident? How did you handle it?

One accident is rarely a medical emergency unless the cat is straining or crying in pain. I would not book a vet appointment yet.

However, documentation is key. If you are already logging this, you are doing the right thing. I suggest you keep a close eye on her for the next 48 hours. If she has a second incident, especially if it is urine, that changes the calculus significantly.

I also recommend checking the tracking log format I posted earlier. It helps you give the vet a clear timeline if you do end up going. For now, I would just monitor and ensure the litter box is clean and accessible.

Oh Mary, I am so sorry you are dealing with this. It is so stressful when it happens, even if it is just once.

When Bella had her kidney issues, the first few times we thought it was just a phase. But looking back, it was a pattern. I know Luna is different, but I just want to say that your instinct to document is great.

I would not rush to the vet for one spot, but I would keep the cleaning supplies ready. If it happens again, I think that is when you call. In my experience, cats are very particular. Sometimes it is just that the box was a little dirty or moved to a new spot. Has anything changed in the house lately?

Mary, you are doing a very good job by staying calm and observing. A single accident is often behavioral rather than medical, especially in a cat that is otherwise healthy.

I would look at the behavioral triggers thread. Sometimes it is as simple as a new scent on the rug or a change in the litter texture. Since Luna is vocal, she might be expressing discomfort with something in the environment.

If she is not straining or hiding, I would wait another day. But if you are worried, a phone call to the vet is always better than a visit. They can tell you if they want to see her based on her history.

Night shift here. One accident? No vet. Two? Maybe. Three? Definitely.

I had a similar issue with Salem when I was working nights. He just picked a spot on the rug because it was quiet and he liked the texture. It took me a week to figure out he just wanted a different location for his box.

Keep your threshold for vet visits in mind. Most vets will say if it is just once and the cat is acting normal, it is not worth the cost. But keep an eye on her drinking habits. If she is drinking more than usual, that is a different story.

Oh dear, Mary. I know how it feels. When Pepper was with me, he had a few moments like that too. :(

I think slong is right. One is usually just a mistake or a stress thing. I would not worry too much. Just keep the house calm for a day or two. Luna sounds like a good girl for being vocal, maybe she is just telling you she is a bit upset about something.

If it happens again, then you can call the vet. But for now, I think you are overthinking it. We all do that when we love them so much. :)
