Ziggy (6, orange tabby) is hissing at Biscuit (2, mixed) every time I open the food cans. I am in the middle of a service so I need a quick fix. What stops the hissing?
Dealing with hissing and aggression between cats
feed them separately. i do this with luna (3 siamese mix). she yells but if i put her bowl in the bedroom and the other cat in the kitchen its fine. no more hissing when i am busy.
Tried that but Ziggy gets aggressive if Biscuit sees the bowl. Is there a better way? I saw a thread about feeding separation but it was long and I dont have time to read it all.
Hello, I understand the stress of a busy schedule. My cats Cleo and Mimi are both 10 and have sensory issues, so we focus heavily on routine. You might want to look at scent swapping basics to help them feel less threatened by each other's presence before feeding. It takes a bit of patience but helps reduce the anxiety that leads to hissing.
My mainecoons Loki and Freya are 4 and used to fight over food too! We started using pheromone diffusers and it helped a lot. Also, make sure they have vertical space like cat trees so they can see each other without being in the same spot. Hope that helps, you've got this!
Thanks for the links. I will try the diffuser and separate rooms. Does the hissing ever just stop on its own or do I need to keep working at it?
