accurate portioning methods

Gus is 8 and still carrying too much weight. I know I need to be precise with his food, but the cup on the bag feels wrong. What is the most accurate way to portion cat food? I tried a standard kitchen measuring cup but it seems too big for his needs.

Stop using the cup on the bag. They are marketing tools, not measuring tools. I use a digital kitchen scale. Weigh out the exact grams the vet tech told me to. It takes 10 seconds. See this thread I started earlier about weighing kibble. It saved my Ziggy from getting too big too.

For dry food, a scale is best, but for wet food, I use the small measuring cup that came with my pumpkin's specific brand. It’s a tiny plastic cup. Check this list of small measuring tools if you don't have one. It’s way more consistent than trying to eyeball it.

Is a scale really necessary? I just use a small bowl and try to fill it to the same spot. I feel like I’m overthinking it. But my pepper is scared of the vacuum so I can’t even weigh the food without her hiding. Does anyone else struggle with this?

@ahughes I get it, but accuracy matters when you are trying to lose weight. I am going to try the scale method. If it works, I will post an update in a follow-up thread. Thanks for the links, especially my old thread about Gus.
